3. Origin, cleaning, and packing
Indian finger millet is grown across several southern and central belts. Seasonality means a single farm cluster cannot cover a 12-month industrial draw. Enterprise buyers should work with a desk that aggregates from more than one harvest window and then mechanically and optically sorts for stones, chaff, and foreign seeds.
Typical export preparation:
- Intake and lot identity — farm or aggregator lot codes retained for traceability.
- Cleaning — destoning, sieving, and optical sort before bagging.
- Drying / equilibration — moisture brought to the agreed band, not “as received.”
- Packing — multi-ply bags with a food-grade moisture barrier; 25 kg and 50 kg formats are common on other grain desks and can be mirrored for ragi when the buyer specifies them.
- Pre-shipment inspection — grading, live-insect check, and foreign-matter residual, using SGS, Bureau Veritas, or an equivalent when the contract requires it.

- Certificate of analysis for moisture, foreign matter, and any extra assay the buyer names (protein, mesh, microbiology).
- Fumigation certificate when the contract or destination calls for it.
